The Real OCF retreat (or at least the real post on it)

March 8th, 2009

Dear Friends and Family, (March 6, 2009)

I apologize for not sending out anything last week, I wrote this update last Sunday but was so busy I never got around to editing it (bad me). This is about my weekend at the OCF retreat, two weekends ago. I will send out another update for this week, hopefully tomorrow but maybe not till Sunday. Thanks for your patience, and enjoy!

Last weekend I went with several fellow OCF members from Columbus up to White Sulfur Springs PA for an OCF retreat. The location of the retreat was an old hotel on a plot of land up in the rolling hills. Besides the hotel (where we stayed), they also had a stable and horses for horseback riding, a climbing wall in the loft, and a tiny bowling alley where you had to set up your own pins. The land up there is beautiful, quiet, and peaceful. The weather was sunny and about 40 during the day, not too cold if Read the rest of this entry »

OCF retreat

March 8th, 2009

Dear Friends and Family, (February 22, 2009)

I went on an OCF (Officer’s Christian Fellowship) retreat this weekend to White Sulfur Springs PA. I had a wonderful time, relaxed, ate amazingly good homecooked food, prayed, sang, rode horses, hiked, and made friends with other cadets and midshipmen from colleges around the Eastern US. I am now home and safe, and busy having been gone all weekend. I’ll try to write a nice long e-mail about my weekend sometime this week or weekend.

Spring is Coming?

March 8th, 2009

Dear Family and Friends, (February 15, 2009)

Well, according to the weather spring IS coming, it has been between 40-60 and sunny for a week now. I’m hearing the birds tweeting, the buds thinking about growing, isn’t it a little early? Well, I suppose it is going to get a little colder next week, but still sunny! I’m not complaining mind you, its just that when it gets too warm too early in the year then the daffodils at home start coming up (thinking all the cold is over), but then a cold spell comes back and kills them all. They really shouldn’t start coming up till late march, but they usually get confused and Read the rest of this entry »

Why are all my posts titled “Busy…” “School…” or perhaps “Squirrel…” maybe because those two words define my life at the moment: Busy, School (not squirrel)

February 8, 2009

Busy busy busy, and it will continue for the next few weekends as well.  Actually it might just be this busy till spring break, since usually once the quarter picks up around midterms it doesn’t get less busy till you finish finals.  Anyway, I could use the excuse of being busy to not write an update, but I know that you all hang on my every word and might waste away if I don’t write you regularly (ok, kidding).

So last week was pretty exciting since we had a big snowstorm (not as bad as what happened down in KY though) and class was canceled Wednesday.  I was actually not very happy about this because Read the rest of this entry »

A Busy Week and Quarterdeck Ball

March 8th, 2009

Dear Friends and Family, (January 25, 2009)

Well, its been a very busy week, mostly because of a paper I had to write. I made the mistake of leaving it as the last thing to do, not realizing that the reading I had to do before I wrote the paper would take me much longer than I expected. Thus I tried to stay up really late finishing it, and therefore fell asleep without setting my alarm, and consequently was late for drill the next morning. This constituted a UA (unauthorized absence), my very first *boooo*. This was rather embarrassing, stressful, and painful, mostly just because I was mad at myself *grrr*. UAs aren’t that Read the rest of this entry »

School update

January 18th, 2009

Dear Friends and Family,

As promised, I’ll give you a rundown of school for the past two weeks.

I’m taking five courses this quarter as well as auditing one: Arabic Grammar 1, Classical Chinese, Introduction to Intelligence, Naval History, Techniques of Political Analysis, and I’m auditing Introduction to the Modern Middle East. When you audit a class you just go to class but the homework and exams are optional. I do not get credit for this class, I am just learning the material. So I’ll be going to all the lectures and doing the reading, but not taking the tests. All my classes are very interesting, though my favorite so far are Read the rest of this entry »

Pictures of Snow

January 18th, 2009

We got about 8 inches of snow last week, and it got down to -10 at night. I took some nice pictures while it was snowing and some of the next morning. Enjoy!

First post of 2009

January 12th, 2009

Dear friends and family,

Whew, what a time the past few weeks have been. The end of last quarter seems like years ago instead of only a month. I won’t go into great detail about my vacation, mostly because all I did was read, work-out, and get ready to go back to college. However, there were a couple of highlights I’ll mention. The first was that my roommate, Vanessa, came to our house to spend Christmas with us. I was overjoyed that she was able to come, and many of you who are from my hometown got to meet her at Church. I am pretty sure she really enjoyed herself (at least she didn’t complain to me ;), and we had a good time showing her all about how we celebrate Christmas. Among other things, we went Read the rest of this entry »

Finals Week

January 12th, 2009

Hi guys! I’m busy studying for finals, so I’ll give a quick rundown of things and that’ll hafta hold you over for a while. I had a great thanksgiving, I hope you all did to. However it was a bit…different due to the fact that our furnace broke and we had no heat the whole time (outside temp between 25 at night and 50 during the day) Our house if very drafty, so we could only keep a room or two moderately warm with little electric heaters. It was finally fixed the following thursday (two days ago).

This past week has been SUPER busy and I got very little sleep the first few nights. That was a necessary, but of course very stupid decision on my part, since little sleep, plus nerves because of a final and a final project presentation, and almost no food that day led to my almost collapse in the middle of my presentation Wednesday evening. I was thoroughly scolded for not taking care of myself by my teacher and sent home, where I fell into bed and slept 10 hours. Thus I royally flunked my chemistry quiz the next morning since I had not had time to study (I was studying for finals before Wednesday and wednesday evening I was asleep). BUT, it didn’t matter at all since our lowest chem quiz grade is dropped and I had gotten 100 on all the others, so my flunked quiz won’t factor into my overall grade.

After all those exciting things happened, Friday morning I was playing [insert name of ball game that I have forgotten what it is called] with a group of my fellow midshipmen at the rec. center and I managed to get an elbow to my nose. This caused my nose to start gushing blood and of course that was the end of that game. My nose was not broken, and it stopped bleeding from the inside after about 2 min. I got cleaned up and bandaided (I also had a cut on the bridge of my nose), and went off to class. Saturday morning when I woke up I had a lovely black eye.

Love y’all, pray for my finals.
