My grandpa’s birthday

This past Friday, April 23, was my grandpa’s 90th birthday. 90 is pretty old, at least in my book, and I think there is definitely something to be said for someone who sticks around for that long 🙂 I’m rather glad my grandfather (dad’s dad) has, since I love him very much and I certainly don’t want to see him go. For those of you who don’t know, I grew up on a big farm, and my grandparent’s house is on the same farm, about a mile away. The farm office and the other rooms where my grandpa spent most of his time during my childhood were in the big white house where I grew up. So from the time I was big enough to remember anything, I remember seeing, and playing with, my grandpa almost every day.

My grandpa is a great man, he put up with my Dad anyway and that’s saying something ( Love ya Da!! ;)> ). He is pretty quite and keeps to himself unless he needs to get something done. He doesn’t show a lot of emotion, except of course, when he is teasing someone or telling a joke. Then his face splits into a wide grin and he laughs, and there is a mischievous twinkle in his eye. He teases my poor grandmother endlessly, and I know she loves every minute of it 🙂 He is always giving advice and little pearls of wisdom whenever he thinks you need it (“you know you shouldn’t eat sugar, its bad for your teeth,” “make sure you get plenty of exercise, it’ll keep you healthy.”). He is very, very hardworking and very careful, precise, and knowledgeable in his work, which has been managing our large farm for the past 40 some years or more. He is also the most generous person I know. He and my grandmother have quite spoiled us grand-kids with wonderful gifts while also teaching us the importance of hard work and responsibility.

I have learned so much from my grandfather, and wouldn’t trade growing up on my farm for anything in the world. I think every kid should get to grow up on a farm with their grandparents. I am so thankful for him and wish there was something I could do for him that could come even close to repaying him for all he as done for me over the years. I can’t, of course, though a nice batch of home-made chocolate chip cookies goes a long way in his book 🙂 My grandma certainly did a good thing when she decided to marry my grandpa, and I want to congratulate him on his 90th birthday and say: “Grandpa, I love you.”
