Thoughts of China: B (Plane Ride)

Sunday, August 10th, 2008

So, where were we? Ah, overall thoughts of China. Hmm……..China is an amazing place, but that can be said of any country. That does not, however, make the saying mean anything less. Its people have been extremely nice to me, helpful, and I have made wonderful friends. However, as a friend pointed out to me, the reason so many strangers were so nice to me could very well be because I am a white, American female. Nonetheless, it is still something, since they could decide to hate white Americans females, and being gawked and stared at is better than being glared and spit at. Some of the food here is absolutely amazing, some of it is (more…)

Final thoughts: A (Train Ride)

Sunday, August 10th, 2008

Well, today is the opening ceremony of the 2008 Olympic Games held in Beijing China. I am on the train right now going to Beijing. Tomorrow I’ll fly out of Beijing on a plane headed home. I love China, I really don’t want to go, but I miss my family, and I miss America, I want to be back in my home country. No matter where I go, what I do, how long I live abroad, I really think America will always be my home, and nowhere else can ever have the same place next to my heart. Anyway, I’m going home now, and I’m excited. I’m also lugging around with me two large, heavy suitcases (one of them very unwieldy and falling apart, bought in China), as well as a fat backpack, and a blue sports bag that must weigh almost (more…)

Finally Done!!!!!!!!!

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

Well, I’m done! Done with the schoolwork part of my Chinese language program. I’m a rather sad to be done with the regular schoolwork, but we are finally done with our final tests and final report, and that is a relief. Just so you understand to the fullest extent my sorrowful situation, on Tuesday I had two tests, a final test for Media class and a final test for Classical Reading class. For the media test there wasn’t too much to prepare for because it was all reading news articles and answering questions, so if over the summer I’ve paid attention and understand how to understand news articles, I’m all good, not much I can do over-night. The classical reading though, I had around 100 vocab words to review for dictation, and I had to review our reading (five short papers). Wednesday we had our final test for Movie class, which was probably the hardest to study for. Over the summer we’ve accumulated around 300 vocab words from class, any of which could be on the test. I also had six weeks of grammar lessons to review, from which the teacher gave us a long list of incorrect sentences to correct and study for the test. And then of course, there is my 8 page paper (2247 characters) that I had to finish writing, editing, and then write it out by hand to give the the teacher. As an afterthought, somewhere during my frenzy of study I had to find time to figure out what I was going to say for my final report (oral report). Yeah! I love school. *I’m only being half sarcastic* So, how has your week been so far? Lol

Right now I’m sitting in our oral report class, having already given my report (second person). I now have to wait around for two more hours listening to other people give their report. It is mildly interesting, but mostly I just want to go to sleep. This afternoon we are having lunch with our Chinese Tutors (Chinese college kids our age who have been helping us all summer to correct our essays, understand vocab and grammar rules, etc) at a German restaurant (which serves German and Chinese food and German beer) that I understand has its own little brewery inside the restaurant. One of our teachers was commenting that I shouldn’t try and go to Jian Shu class (martial art) this afternoon after lunch because I would surely be a little tipsy from our “lunch” with our tutors. When I told her I didn’t drink, she looked at me like I had just told her I didn’t breath. It was very funny. Who knows, maybe I’ll taste some of their different kinds of beer while I’m there, but I have no inclination whatsoever to drink.

Today and tomorrow I have to get ready to leave. This would include cleaning my room, doing laundry, packing, picking up my train ticket, and saying goodbye to everyone. Going back to the US will proceed in mostly the same way I got here: train to Beijing, stay in my friend’s uncle’s hotel, fly out of Beijing in the morning. However, this time, the time change is in my favor, so even though the trip will take around 24 hours, I will get home only about “10” hours after I left Beijing. I should get home Saturday night (pray for no missed planes or delays) and for those of you who go to CPC, I look forward to seeing you in Church this Sunday. That’s all for now, I’ll try to write a longer post while I’m on the train/plane home about this past weekend and this week, as well as my overall thoughts about China.

Finals week

Saturday, August 2nd, 2008

Next week is finals week, I have a six page paper to finish writing (in Chinese!) and three tests to study for, so this is more or less the extent of my post this week.  Please keep me in your prayers, that I would focus and prepare well for my tests as well as get everything prepared to return to the Unites States.  I will be very sad to leave China, I love it here, every day I love it more, but I miss my family and I miss America very much, so it is kind of bittersweet.

Thank you all, everyone who has already been praying for me, hopefully I’ll see most of you soon when I get back to Kentucky or back to OSU in Sept.
